From the very begining

How it started

The series of events that led to the formation of ECCNI started with an email from Prof. Isaac Folorunsho-Adewole, the formal minister of health of federal republic of Nigeria and the chairman of National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE).

He requested Dr. Ishak Lawal, the pioneer executive director of ECCNI to support the planning of Nigeria’s response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) call for member states to commemorate the launch of the global strategy for acceleration of cervical cancer as a disease of public health significance. All WHO member states were to light monuments in TEAL on the 17th November 2020.

Research & Grants

We adopt action research strategy in implementation of all our programs. The main focus of our research is to provide context specific locally relevant evidence for practice in low resource settings in alignment with the principles of Resource Stratified Prevention/Elimination of Cervical Cancer and Treatment (RESPECT).

Why Did Lady Y Present Late?

This project seeks to explore the similarities between factors promoting poor outcome of cervical cancer and high maternal mortality in low resource settings by asking why did lady Y present late similar to how Prof Mahmoud Fathalla asked why did Mrs X die? There is a striking similarity between the prevalence of cervical cancer and maternal mortality. Both are preventable, associated with low socio-economic status, related to inequality in access to quality healthcare, have evidence based preventive interventions and these interventions have successfully been implemented in developed countries while developing countries have not been able to take advantage of these proven interventions to reduce their burden of these conditions. The answers to the question why did Mrs X die provided better insight into the factors causing maternal mortality thereby providing basis for advocating a comprehensive intervention package to reduce maternal mortality. Similarly, we are hoping that the deconstruction of factors promoting late presentation will avail us with better intervention strategies to reduce the burden of cervical cancer.

We are therefore commissioning a multi-centre observational study to provide data to answer the question, why did lady Y present late. The study is called Journey to cervical cancer treatment (JOCT). The story of Mercy Moses was used to provide relevant timelines in the clinical journey to cervical cancer survivorship. Factor determining these timelines will be explore in the JOCT study with the aim of answering the question, why did lady Y present late.

FIGO Cervical Cancer Elimination Seed Grant:

End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI), Nigeria was one of the 4 recipients of the FIGO cervical cancer elimination grant in 2022. The grant was to for Capacity Building for Outpatient Clinics to Improve Adolescent Vaccine Uptake and Women’s Demand for Cervical Cancer Screening in Nigeria. - (link to announcement ).

The project used information, communication and education (ICE) approaches with outpatients as a vehicle for promotion. Implementation of the project was hindered by lack of access to HPV vaccine as at the proposed time of implementation. The proposal was redesigned from the initial target of 36 gynaecologists to 6 gynaecologist across the 6 geopolitical zones when HPV vaccine was introduced into the immunization schedule of the country. The learning point from the project forms the bedrock for ECCNI’s intervention to improve HPV vaccine uptake in Nigeria.

CCAE Grant:

The Cervical Cancer Action for Elimination (CCAE) HPV Vaccination Learning Series provided participating civil society organizations (CSO) with practical tools to apply behavioural science principles to HPV vaccination challenges. Participating CSOs were thought how to apply a structured three-step behavioural science methodology to improve HPV vaccination;

Step 1- Define the behavioural problem,
step 2- Diagnose the psychological, structural and contextual elements influencing the problem and
step 3- Design potential solutions to address the problem.

Building on lessons from the Learning Series, End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI) designed a project to change the behaviour of healthcare providers towards recommending HPV vaccine. The project aim to support healthcare providers to consistently recommend HPV vaccine during consultations . (link to CCAE announcement of the grant)

The project will be implemented in 6 facilities across the 6 geopolitical zones with funding support by CCAE and the foundation laid with the earlier FIGO grant
